Giorgia Meloni is set to become Italy's first woman prime minister at the head of its most right-wing government since World War Two after leading a conservative alliance to triumph at Sunday's general election.

Meloni, head of the nationalist Brothers of Italy party, said on Monday that Italian voters had given a clear mandate to the right to form the next government and called for unity to help confront the country's many problems.

Enrico Letta, the leader of Italy's centre-left Democratic Party (PD), on Monday described Meloni's victory as a "sad day for Italy and Europe".

Some Italians seemed unimpressed with the latest change in the revolving door of Italian politics.

"I don't like her, but she is what Italians need," said Rome resident Andrea Rizzoni. "Italy must go down, the more it goes down the better so that the Italians wake up and can change something."
