Dr. Theresa Tam, Canada’s chief public officer of health provided an update on the latest COVID-19 modelling data on Friday, that showed further lifting of current public health restrictions could cause a "rapid and strong" resurgence of cases due to variants' spread.

Tam said the country has over 660 cases of the B.1.1.7 variant, first detected in the U.K., 39 cases of the B.1.3.5.1 variant, and one case of the Brazilian P1 variant, and pointed to the situation in Newfoundland and Labrador which demonstrates how quickly the situation can change as five provinces are reporting evidence of community spread of the variants.

If a resurgence occurs, current public health measures won't be enough, according to Dr. Tam, however, she said a combination of strict public health measures and adherence to personal precautions can bring the epidemic under control, pointing to the experience of the United Kingdom.

The top doctor reported less than 33,000 active cases nationally, which almost 60 per cent fewer active cases than a month ago.

Although the total cumulative number of cases has increased by over 148,000 cases, the rate of increase slowed over the past several weeks.
