Kosovo "under attack," Serbia to blame for deadly shootout: President Osmani

On Thursday, Kosovo's president Vjosa Osmani accused Serbia and its president Aleksandar Vucic of being behind a shootout between armed men and Kosovar police in the north of the country last weekend, which was the worst violence seen in the restive area for years.

"The group was simply carrying out the intentions and motives of Serbia as a country and its leader, Vucic," Osmani said.

The incident occurred on Sunday when a group of ethnic Serb gunmen stormed the village of Banjska, engaging in a violent confrontation with the police. They barricaded themselves inside a Serbian Orthodox monastery, which the police were able to retake later that day, resulting in the death of three attackers and one police officer.

Osmani further stated that Serbia still has territorial claims against Kosovo and was attempting to implement a "Crimea model" by creating tensions in Kosovo's north, where about 50,000 local Serbs still consider Belgrade as their capital and reject rule from Pristina. Serbia, which has not recognized Kosovo's independence, blames Kosovo for causing violence by mistreating ethnic Serb residents. However, Kosovo denies these accusations.
