Shootout raises tensions between Serbia and Kosovo

A police officer and three gunmen have been killed in Kosovo in a shootout that has further raised tensions with its neighbour Serbia.

Three assailants and a police officer were also killed during a siege by ethnic Serb gunmen on a Orthodox monastery in Banjska, Leposavic, 35 miles north of the capital Pristina.

Kosovo's prime minister, Albin Kurt, has accused Serbia of sending armed men into Kosovo.

Ethnic Albanians make up a majority of Kosovo's 1.8 million people.

But around 50,000 Serbs in the north of the former Serbian province do not accept Kosovo's 2008 declaration of independence.
