Kazakhstan's President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev said on Friday he had given shoot-to-kill orders to deal with ongoing protests from those he called "bandits and terrorists," adding that those who failed to surrender would be "destroyed."

He said as part of the "counter-terrorist" operation, he had ordered law enforcement agencies and the army "to shoot to kill without warning."

Police in Almaty on Thursday said they had killed dozens of rioters overnight, as Russian paratroopers were deployed as part of a peacekeeping force.

The protests began after the government lifted price controls on liquefied petroleum gas at the start of the year.
