Jacob Hoggard faces stricter bail conditions ahead of sentencing after sex assault conviction

New and stricter bail conditions have been imposed for Jacob Hoggard from the band Hedley, as he awaits sentencing for a charge of sexual assault after being convicted on Sunday evening.

Ten men and two women found the 32-year-old former frontman guilty of sexual assault causing bodily harm in relation to an Ottawa woman in 2016 and acquitted Hoggard of sexually assaulting a 16-year-old fan. It took the jury six days to deliberate, reaching a deadlock twice.

“The prospect of a lengthy jail sentence significantly increases the likelihood he will flee,” Justice Gillian Roberts said. She also added now that Hoggard has been convicted, “public confidence in the administration of justice” is needed.

Hoggard’s wife, Rebekah Asselstine, put up $200,000 for bail and is one of two sureties who must ensure he abides by his bail conditions. His lawyers and the judge will meet virtually on Friday to set a date for sentencing in the summer. Catherine McDonald reports.
