The number of migrants who arrived to the Italian island of Lampedusa in recent days reached 7,000 - the equivalent of the entire population of the island itself. Most of the men, women and children arriving are rescued by local coast guards from rickety boats. An estimated 2,000 people have died making the often treacherous journey to Italy and Malta from North Africa this year alone. A 5-month-old baby who drowned on Wednesday was the latest victim. Germany recently stopped accepting migrants arriving in Italy under a European solidarity plan. The United Nations is urging European Union countries to cooperate to help thousands of migrants stuck on the island of Lampedusa.
