The European Commission President has paid tribute to the people of Lampedusa, saying they are doing all they can to support the unprecedented number of refugees and migrants arriving from parts of Africa.

But Ursula von der Leyen says the EU needs to step up its efforts to stop traffickers.
The United Nations says 8,500 people have come to the Italian island just this week alone.
There are now more migrants in Lampedusa than residents.

Al Jazeera’s Harry Fawcett is in Lampedusa for the latest updates.
