The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) met on Wednesday after Israel’s war cabinet approved a temporary ceasefire with the Hamas militant group that is expected to bring the first halt in fighting in a devastating six-week conflict, and win freedom for dozens of hostages held captive in the Gaza Strip.

The deal calls for a four-day ceasefire, during which Israel will halt its military offensive in Gaza while Hamas frees “at least” 50 of the roughly 240 hostages it and other militants are holding, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said.

Gilad Erdan, the UN representative for Israel stated that "as soon as the pause ends, we will continue striving towards our goals with full force. We will not stop until we eliminate all of Hamas' terror capabilities."

Palestine's UN representative Riyad Mansour said that it "welcomes a truce," after a temporary ceasefire deal was reached and added that "hundreds of Palestinian children will not be killed because of this truce."

Meanwhile, UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell stated that "in addition to bombs, rockets, and gunfire, Gaza's children are at extreme risk from catastrophic living conditions." She adds that all children in Gaza are facing "what could soon become a catastrophic nutrition crisis."
