The United States has again vetoed a United Nations Security Council (UNSC) draft resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas war.

The vote in the 15-member council was 13-1 in favour of a ceasefire, with the United Kingdom abstaining.

The U.S. instead pushed the council to adopt its call for a temporary ceasefire linked to the release of hostages held by Hamas.

“Colleagues, over the past few weeks, we have made incredibly clear that the resolution before the council would not achieve the goal of sustainable peace and may, in fact, run counter to it. Proceeding with the vote today was wishful and irresponsible,” said Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield in a statement following the vote.

This is the third U.S. veto since Israel launched its war on Hamas following the Oct. 7 attacks.
