On Saturday, Israel said it sent troops into Gaza Friday night and were still in the field. The country had earlier made only brief sorties into Gaza during three weeks of bombardment to root out Hamas militants, who it said had killed 1,400 Israelis on Oct. 7.

"Last night, the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) entered northern Gaza, and expanded the field operation. Engaged in this operation are infantry, armored, combat engineering, and artillery forces that are accompanied by heavy fire," said Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari, adding that Israel would allow “more trucks” carrying food, water and medicine to enter Gaza.

"We passed a stage in the war. Overnight, the ground in Gaza shook. We attacked above the ground and underground. We attacked terror operatives of all ranks, everywhere. The instructions for the forces are clear: the operation will continue until a new order," Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant said in a separate televised statement.

Gaza was under an almost complete blackout, with internet and phone services cut for more than 12 hours by Saturday morning. Telecoms firms and the Palestinian Red Crescent Society said it was the result of Israeli bombardments.
