Food inflation in Canada continues to outpace overall inflation in the country and it has many wondering why the price of supply-managed items like milk, butter and eggs are so high.
The system was born out of a difficult time for farmers in the 1960s when technological advances meant poultry, egg and dairy producers struggled with oversupply and low, unstable prices. They banded together to ask provincial governments to create marketing boards and thus the supply management system was born.
