U.S. President Joe Biden said Sunday that Hurricane Ida had made landfall and cautioned people to take the storm seriously, saying the "devastation is likely to be immense. We shouldn't kid ourselves." He went on to add that the storm was "life-threatening" and was continuing to "rage and ravage" in the region of Louisiana, though it is also causing impacts in Alabama and Mississippi.

Biden said they would be putting the country's "full might" behind rescue and recovery and that while he was no expert, "I don't think we've ever had as much preparation" for such a storm. Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards had said earlier this weekend that the storm could be the worst direct hit from a hurricane the state has seen since the 1850s.

Bel Edwards confirmed on Sunday that the storm had made landfall as a Category 4 as forecast. Biden said he had also been in touch with the governors of Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi in terms of the resources his government would provide.
