Hurricane Ida made landfall on Sunday along the coast of Louisiana as a Category 4 storm, with winds up to 150 miles per hour, or 230 kilometres per hour, and began to cause damage in various communities, including ripping the roof off the Lady of the Sea General Hospital in the city of Galliano.

In the French Quarter of New Orleans, the storm also brought down awnings from a brewery and left people in St. Bernard's Parish dealing with flooding. And in the town of Grand Isle, storm surge swamped the community.

The storm, according to Gov. John Bel Edwards, is one of the strongest storms to make landfall in the state in modern times. However, he did advise that at this time, they did not anticipate any "overtopping" of the Mississippi River levees.
