Hurricane Beryl struck the coast of Texas as a Category 1 storm, causing widespread damage and dangerous conditions. The storm, which weakened from a hurricane after pounding the coastal town of Matagorda, re-strengthened and became a hurricane again late Sunday.

During a press conference on Monday, Houston Mayor John Whitmire urged residents to "shelter in place" as the city was hit hard by the storm. "We're in an emergency, we're in a rescue mode," he said.

Residents filled up their gas tanks and stocked up on essentials at local grocery stores. "For those of us that do live on the island we’re very well prepared in terms of the flooding," Texas resident Peyton Schott said.

Meanwhile, some beachgoers attempted to enjoy the weather, and lifeguards enforced safety measures and cleared the water for the public's protection. "I asked him, I was like I can’t swim? And he was like, no, do you want the cops to be called on you?" beachgoer Ryan Harmon said.

According to the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC), the storm is forecast to move across eastern Texas and into the Lower Mississippi Valley and the Ohio Valley later in the week.
