Louisiana has begun to see storm surges, flooding and high winds as Hurricane Ida makes landfall in the state as a Category 4.

The governor, John Bel Edwards, warned earlier this weekend that the storm could be the state's worst direct hit by a hurricane since the 1850s.

Ida gained strength early Sunday as it passed over the northern Gulf of Mexico, increasing wind speeds to 150 miles per hour or 230 kilometres per hour.

On Saturday, U.S. President Joe Biden issued an emergency declaration for the state and called on all residents to "pay attention and be prepared." He said Sunday the federal government would put its "full might" behind the state and other regions impacted with as many resources as needed.
