U.S. President Joe Biden said Monday that one person is confirmed dead and a million more have been left without power after Hurricane Ida swept through Louisiana.
The president urged residents to “shelter in place” and said search and rescue efforts are underway.
Ida has since been downgraded to a tropical storm.
Biden also said on Monday that he has instructed the Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) to authorize the use of surveillance drones to assess the damage to energy infrastructure in U.S. states hit hard by the storm.
He said he's also ordered the Department of Homeland Security to make satellite images available that might assist in assessing damage from the storm.
