Nicaragua scrambled to evacuate citizens from its Atlantic coasts on Monday as Hurricane Eta, which threatens to bring “catastrophic winds” and flash floods, closed in on the Central American country.

The storm, which is now a devastating Category 4 hurricane, is expected to slam the northeast coast of Nicaragua on Tuesday morning, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC).

The NHC said Eta’s rains may cause a “life-threatening” storm-surge, flash flooding and landslides across parts of Central America, as well as Jamaica, southern Haiti, the Cayman Islands, El Salvador and southern Mexico.

On Monday afternoon, Nicaraguan officials said they had evacuated about 3,000 coastal families and sent in supplies to help residents prepare for the storm’s impact. The government has also placed five Atlantic coast regions on red alert, its highest warning.
