Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry announced his resignation late on Monday night, following protests against his rule and pressure from Washington to accelerate the transition to a new governance structure.

U.S. State Department Matthew Miller welcomed the plan for a transitional governance structure in Haiti, which Miller says includes a focus on security and paves a pathway to free and fair elections.

Following the announcement, Haitians expressed mixed reactions about the country's future.

A political activist said, "We thank 'Vivre Ensemble' (armed gang Live Together) for forcing Ariel to make this decision because when we demonstrate in the streets, the police give us tear gas and bullets, and Vivre Ensemble unites and kicks Ariel out."

Meanwhile, another local stated that, "This is a game. The Americans are very guilty of what is happening now. The majority of weapons in Haiti come from the U.S."
