Haitian migrants hope to stay in Mexico, others cross river with supplies to the US

After being turned away from the U.S., Haitian migrants were hopeful to stay in Mexico and find jobs.

Hundreds of migrants lined up at the Mexican Commission for Refugee Assistance on Wednesday in order to obtain refugee papers.

Most of the Haitians have not arrived directly from Haiti. Many had previously tried to settle in South America, but recounted difficulties finding work amid COVID-19 pandemic-related restrictions and the economic downturn.

At the U.S.-Mexico border, a family of Haitian migrants carried food and supplies donations across the Rio Grande river from Mexico to give it to their compatriots who remain in the United States on Wednesday.

Many on the border have crossed to Mexico in search of food, medical care and supplies.

Some have decided to stay on the Mexico side in Ciudad Acuna, across from Del Rio, citing shortages of food and poor conditions on the U.S. side. By Wednesday, around 200 people had set up a handful of camping tents and tarps as shelter.
