In tonight’s top story: The death of Ridge Meadows RCMP officer Const. Rick O’Brien Friday sparked memorials in his home province of B.C. and cities across Canada. O’Brien was married and a father to six children. His death has highlighted the risks police face when on duty.
A building in Montreal collapsed suddenly on Saturday afternoon, killing one and leaving two with critical injuries. It took emergency services hours to uncover the man who passed away in the incident and an investigation is ongoing.
Also, days after fleeing Nagorno-Karabakh following Azerbaijan’s victory over the region, ethnic Armenians have arrived in Armenia. The refugees were escorted by Russian peacekeepers and recount their personal experiences escaping the terror over the last few days. At least 200 people, including civilians died prior to Wednesday’s ceasefire.
It’s been 146 days since Hollywood film and television writers went on strike across the U.S., however, the union may now be on the cusp of a deal with major studios. Writers and SAG-AFTRA writers who joined the strike in mid-July have been fighting for higher wages and worker protections, including AI, among other things.
Additionally, NASA’s first Bennu asteroid sample landed near Salt Lake City on Sunday morning, ending the seven-year OSIRIS-REx space mission. The 250-gram sample may not seem like much to many, but to scientists it could hold some of the answers to burning questions about Earth’s creation.
