Global National: June 16, 2023 | RCMP investigating who's responsible for deadly Manitoba crash

In tonight's top story: RCMP continue to investigate the deadly crash in Carberry, Man., that lead to the deaths of at least 15 people, mostly seniors. The force is looking to identify culpability for the mass casualty, as families mourn and want answers. Our Mike Drolet and Melissa Ridgen report from Manitoba, with Dawna Friesen.

There are calls for safer crossings on Canada's highways following this tragedy. Eric Sorensen reports a lack of traffic lights and order at intersections may not be unusual in the country.

Canada's federal government had a legal win over who's allowed to enter this country. Canada's top court upheld the Safe Third Country Agreement between Canada and the U.S., ruling the pact that allows this country to send refugees back south of the border is constitutional. Touria Izri has that story.

Plus, NATO's defence ministers have just wrapped up two days of meetings in Brussels. The summit saw new announcements of more money and weapons to help Ukraine amid the war, but there are also efforts to strengthen Europe's defence against Russia's aggression beyond this conflict. As David Akin reports, Canada was among those vowing to do more to ensure that happens.

And it has been two years since Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin was convicted of the murder of George Floyd. Now, a U.S. investigation has determined that the city's police department engaged in a pattern of racial discrimination and excessive force. As Jackson Proskow reports, the U.S. Department of Justice hoped the findings of a probe will lead to long-awaited reforms.
