Volkswagen, the world's biggest car company, said Friday it will build its first manufacturing facility in Canada near the southwestern Ontario town of St. Thomas. Volkswagen says it will spend $7 billion to build a plant that will make batteries for the electric vehicles of the future, and the federal government is promising to backstop that investment and give Volkswagen as much as $13 billion over 10 years. David Akin reports.

After Volkswagen, the world's biggest car company, announced Friday it will build its first manufacturing facility in Canada near a southwestern Ontario town, it’s expected that the factory will employ at least 3,000 and could help create 30,000 spinoff jobs. As the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) strike drags on, it's plunging hundreds of thousands of immigration applications into uncertainty. Tens of thousands of federal public workers have walked off the job, including civil servants who handle immigration files.
