Extreme temperatures in Greece fueled wildfires on the mainland and on an island near Athens Wednesday, one day after a blaze tore through a forest near the capital, leaving behind scorched earth and scores of gutted homes, businesses and vehicles.

Europe has been experiencing extreme weather this summer, from heavy flooding in the north to severe heatwaves and fires in parts of the Mediterranean, including in Greece's neighbor Turkey over the past week.

One wildfire spread into a coal-fired power plant east of Bodrum in southwest Turkey after burning nearby since Tuesday, the local mayor said. Eight people have died in the blazes since last week.
