El Salvador extends state of exception as arrests hit 50,000

El Salvador's government has extended sweeping emergency measures used to crack down on powerful street gangs for another month. The government defends the measure as helping to dismantle ‘terrorist structures.’ They were first announced in March, and have been criticised by rights groups but the public seems to have embraced them.
