El Salvador’s Congress has approved a request from the country's President to suspend some constitutional protections.
The move comes after a dramatic surge in gang violence, with police reporting 62 killings on Saturday – the highest single-day total since the turn of the century.
Salvadorian President Nayib Bukele has been accused of negotiating a truce with the gangs in return for political support – something he denies.
The new restrictions are in place for 30 days – but could be extended.
Al Jazeera’s Alan Fisher reports.
