European lawmakers called for an ambitious outcome from November's COP26 climate summit during a debate in Strasbourg on Wednesday.

Parliament is set to vote on the bloc's stance on Thursday as it heads towards the summit, being billed by climate campaigners as crucial if the worst effects of global warming are to be reined in.

Some lawmakers expressed dissatisfaction with current commitments, including French green lawmaker Karima Delli, who said "our planet, our people, are being swept away by the same tsunami, an unstoppable apocalypse if we do not act now.”

The United Nations event, which begins on Oct. 31 in Glasgow, will seek to clinch more ambitious targets from countries to cut emissions, and finish the "rulebook" for how countries set targets and track progress under the 2015 Paris climate deal.
