World leaders, including U.S. President Joe Biden, pledged to take ambitious actions to curb the effects of climate change during a virtual summit on Thursday.

The conference drew commitments from Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin, among others, to cooperate on cutting emissions despite sharp rivalries with the United States.

For his part, Biden said the U.S. would work to cut greenhouse gases “in half” by the end of the decade.

Scientists say that climate change caused by coal plants, car engines and other fossil fuel use is worsening droughts, floods, hurricanes, wildfires and other disasters and that humans are running out of time to stave off the catastrophic extremes of global warming.
