Veteran British naturalist Sir David Attenborough addressed world leaders at the United Nations COP26 climate conference and urged them to take more action to address the threat of global climate change.

He told the gathered leaders “the climate emergency comes down to a single number - the concentration of carbon in our atmosphere” and said they had a unique opportunity to stop that number from rising any further.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres also addressed world leaders, saying greater ambition and action was needed to keep to the goal of holding average temperature rises to 1.5 degrees Celsius.

Existing pledges to cut emissions would allow the planet's average surface temperature to rise 2.7C this century, which the United Nations says would supercharge the destruction that climate change is already causing.
