Former U.S. president Barack Obama spoke at the COP26 climate summit on Monday, criticizing both the Republican party and countries like China and Russia for what he described as "playing politics" to avoid acting on climate change.

"It was particularly discouraging to see the leaders of two of the world's largest emitters, China and Russia, declined to even attend the proceedings" Obama said.

Referring to the Paris Agreement struck in 2015, Obama told the COP26 summit that the agreement showed the world progress is possible on climate change.

But, he said the bad news is that the world is “nowhere near where it needed to be” in tackling global warming yet.

Obama arrived at the climate talks on Monday at the start of the second week of negotiations, which will focus on the nitty-gritty details that need to be agreed by over 190 countries to further implement the Paris agreement.

His aim at the summit is to highlight how far the world has come since the Paris agreement was reached six years ago - but stress that more difficult work lies ahead.
