Ontario Premier Doug Ford called on the federal government to tighten air and land measures to contain the spread of COVID-19 variants into the province.

"If I had the power, I would close down Pearson airport immediately, I would shut down the land border crossings to only those who are absolutely essential," Ford said.

Ford said there are "massive" loopholes at the U.S. land border where people can cross without quarantine requirements.

"I talked to a taxi driver the other day, they had 400 cars down at the border picking people up. The system is broken." Ford said.

The premier also called to halt arrival of international students into Ontario, and to put in place mandatory hotel quarantine for people crossing the land border.

He said 90 per cent of the average daily cases in Ontario this week were for variants of concern, and that the Indian variant has already been detected.
