Speaking to Al Jazeera, Gideon Levy, a columnist for Israeli newspaper Haaretz, said that Netanyahu’s position as prime minister will not be challenged unless members of his coalition in parliament break rank.

That’s unlikely to happen any time soon, even as calls grow among the public for his removal, he said.

“He still has his base, and this base will be very faithful to Netanyahu, but it’s not only about the public opinion,” Levy told Al Jazeera from Tel Aviv. “The majority in the parliament is still very solid and therefore all the talking now about replacing him is not realistic.”

“You need four members of his coalition to quit and change sides. I don’t see any of the members of the coalition doing so in the coming future. And if not, all the talking about replacing Netanyahu is quite hollow,” he said.

Levy added that beyond Netanyahu’s political future, the vast majority of the Israeli parliament continues to support the country’s war on Gaza.
