U.S. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer blasted the failed vote Wednesday by the chamber to pass the Women's Health Protection Act, which sought to make abortion legal throughout the U.S. by codifying the Roe v. Wade court ruling into law. Schumer said the vote "makes it crystal clear" the contrast between Democrats and Republicans ahead of the midterm elections.

"Elect more pro-choice Democrats if you want to see a woman have control over her own body," he said. "Elect more MAGA (Make America Great Again) Republicans if you want to see a nationwide ban on abortion."

The legislation would have required 60 votes to pass the filibuster rule but Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin joined all 50 Republicans in voting against it 49-51.

Republicans, however, criticized the bill with Sen. Ben Sasse questioning where was the tolerance and compassion in putting forward the bill. Sen. John Cornyn also said the bill was the "Abortion on Demand Act," one without limitations or restrictions.

"Where is the attempt to understand that the majority of Americans want there to be prohibitions on abortions at some point in the pregnancy," Sasse said. "Americans don't want that kind of radicalism we see in this bill before us today."

Vice-President Kamala Harris, after the vote, expressed her disappointment, saying that "the Senate failed to stand in defence of a woman's right to make decisions about her own body."
