Day after Fiona: Eastern Canada takes stock of post-storm damage as conditions ease

What a difference a day can make — yesterday, the region of Atlantic Canada was battered by post-tropical storm Fiona. Today, the sun is out with hardly a cloud in the sky, spotlighting the first look at the post-storm damage as people emerge from the safety of their homes.

The storm may have passed, but there’s still a lot of work to be done. Many communities began cleaning up yesterday, as soon as the weather permitted. But restoration began at different times in different areas, where conditions in places like Cape Breton didn’t ease until much later into the day.

Across the province of Nova Scotia, downed trees and power lines covered the streets in much of the region. Over 400,000 customers were without power, or three-quarters of the province. Some parts are dealing with homes swept out to sea.
