Alberta continues to lead Canada in active COVID-19 cases, as unvaccinated people and the more contagious Delta variant continue to drive the surge of new infections.

There are currently more than 15,000 active cases in the province, with about 137 in intensive care. The surge has forced the cancellation of surgeries and other medical procedures.

As Heather Yourex-West explains, the province's hospitals and staff are being pushed to the brink again, with the worst still yet to come.
