COVID-19: Alberta students to return to in class learning on Jan. 10 | FULL

Alberta Education Minister Adriana LaGrange announced on Wednesday that all kindergarten to Grade 12 students will return to in class learning on Jan. 10.

Last week, the minister announced Alberta was extending the student winter break provincewide amid the rapid spread of the Omicron COVID-19 variant.

LaGrange also announced that the government was distributing rapid test kits and medical grade masks to schools to "lower the risk of transmission of the Omicron variant."

Distribution of masks and tests will begin later this week according to the minister and will be shipped in phases.

Chief medical officer Dr. Deena Hinshaw announced during the update that there were about 4752 new cases of COVID-19 identified over the previous 24-hours a new record daily high.

The province also saw a rise in hospitalizations with 470 with 72 patients in the ICU.

Alberta recorded 11 deaths related to COVID-19 on Wednesday bring the total number of people lost to COVID-19 in Alberta to 3,333.
