Alberta Premier Jason Kenney announced on Wednesday some changes to their indoor gathering restrictions, saying that the two-household limit was being lifted allowing people to gather this holiday with more households, though he advised the 10-person maximum would still apply.
However, Kenney also said that in addition to the household limits being lifted, the indoor gathering measures would now apply regardless of vaccination status. Prior to Wednesday, the indoor gathering limit did not apply to unvaccinated Albertans. Kenney said with about 90 per cent of adults having "some level of vaccine protection, we believe it is no longer necessary."
As the Omicron variant continues to spread, Kenney announced that the province would also be making free COVID-19 rapid antigen test kits available starting Dec. 17 at select Alberta Health Service sites and pharmacies with more than half a million test kits available. He said it would be on a first-come, first-serve basis but that each kit contained five tests for use.
The province would also be expanding their COVID-19 booster program starting Wednesday, with those aged 50 and older and all health-care workers being able to book their booster shot as long as it has been six months since their second dose.
Kenney said that as of Wednesday, 84.9 per cent of Albertans aged 12 and older have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, with that number increasing to 89.3 per cent among those 18 and older.
