Rain and cooler temperatures are helping crews manage wildfires in northern Alberta, but officials are warning the fire danger is expected to remain high for the foreseeable future.

“The wildfire situation remains serious: while the situation stabilizes in some areas and more evacuees return home, other areas are still in the thick of fire danger,” said Bre Hutchinson, executive director of the Alberta Emergency Management Agency.

“There's a lot of summer left ahead of us and there are months left in the fire season,” Hutchinson added.

Hutchinson also announced that the town of Rainbow Lake is no longer under evacuation notice.

Alberta Wildfire is also responding to the demand for firefighters as other parts of the country begin to see an increase in fire activity.

“Unfortunately, our fellow Canadians are now experiencing the kind of extraordinary wildfire season we've been fighting here in Alberta. There's a demand for firefighters like never before, but we're planning ahead and working closely to bring in extra help from around the world,” said Christie Tucker from Alberta Wildfire.

An evacuation order remains in effect for the area around Fort Chipewyan as the newly named Rocky River Fire continues to burn.
