Coronavirus: UK ramps up restrictions as new COVID-19 strain quickly spreads

A new, fast-spreading strain of COVID-19 has been linked to 62 per cent of new cases in London, U.K..

Medical experts are warning the new strain is over 70 per cent more transmissible than existing strains and has prompted the government to announce a new Tier 4 as part of its alert system, requiring all non-essential shops to close and cancelling a planned easing of the rules around social gatherings for a five day period at Christmas.

London, as well as eastern and southeast England, enter the new tier of restrictions after the end of business hours Saturday, with the rest of England expected to also see rules around gatherings sharply curtailed. Crystal Goomansingh takes a look at the new restrictions and how residents are preparing for an even more different Christmas than many planned for.
