Quebec Premier François Legault announced the province would prohibit gatherings during the Christmas holidays in red zones, which affects a majority of Quebecers, more than one week ahead of his self-imposed deadline to issue a decision for the holiday season, as coronavirus cases, deaths and hospitalizations continue to rise.

“With the numbers we have, it’s unrealistic to think we will change the situation in time for Christmas,” he said. “We need to protect our nurses and our elderly.”

Quebec implemented Wednesday tighter measures on shopping malls and stores to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus across the province amid an uptick in cases, hospitalizations and deaths linked to the pandemic.

Beginning Friday, there will be a maximum number of clients permitted in shopping centres and stores, depending on their size.

Quebec has a total of 145,062 confirmed cases and over 7,000 deaths linked to COVID-19 as of Friday.
