Manitoba Premier Brian Pallister announced on Thursday that his government ordered $40 million worth of Songbird Hyris rapid COVID-19 tests newly approved by Health Canada, which will deliver 45,000 tests monthly to be prioritized for testing teachers.

The announcement came after the province's education minister announced Wednesday a two-week period of remote learning for students in grades 7 through 12 following the holiday break in an effort to prevent COVID-19 cases, beginning Jan. 4.

The premier also announced they have enough supplies to deliver two doses of an upcoming COVID-19 vaccine to every Manitoban.

The vaccines will not be mandatory, said Pallister, saying the province will launch an education campaign on the benefits of being vaccinated.

Manitoba has a total of 17,384 cases and 342 deaths due to the virus as of Thursday.
