Coronavirus: Could at-home COVID-19 rapid tests help contain the 2nd wave?

As Canada’s second wave of the coronavirus threatens another lockdown, some health professionals are pushing the government to purchase a new type of testing: paper-strip antigen tests.

These at-home paper-strip tests look for antigens in the saliva or from nasal swabs. Unlike the standard PCR test which is highly sensitive, these tests require more viral particles in order to detect COVID-19, so it would likely only find people positive for the virus during the window when they're likely to be transmitting it. This means there’s a chance people receive false negatives. But advocates say that allowing people, such as frontline workers or school children, to test themselves more regularly could prevent outbreaks.
