Canada's chief public health officer Dr. Theresa Tam welcomed on Tuesday the federal government's announcement on securing an initial round of up to 249,000 doses of COVID-19 Pfizer vaccine before the end of the year.
However, she urged people to continue following public health measures of mask-wearing and physical distancing until a vaccine is widely available.
Maj.-Gen. Dany Fortin, head of Canada’s COVID-19 vaccine distribution team laid out the distribution plan, starting with 14 initial locations across the country, chosen by provinces to receive the Pfizer vaccine.
He said vaccine availability will increase gradually and so vaccination will expand from the most vulnerable to the least vulnerable as more doses arrive.
Despite U.S. President Donald Trump's executive order, Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs Dominic LeBlanc said the federal government is confident Pfizer will be able to deliver the vaccine doses to Canada.
Trump signed an executive order aimed at giving Americans priority access to U.S. coronavirus vaccines.
Dr. Tam reported 6,499 new cases of COVID-19 and 84 new deaths related to the virus on Tuesday.
