Coronavirus: Canada's top doctor says pandemic has "shone a spotlight" on health-care inequalities

Canada’s chief medical officer of health Dr. Theresa Tam spoke Wednesday after releasing her annual report on public health, saying that the novel coronavirus pandemic has shone a spotlight on inequalities in Canada’s health-care system.

Tam said she believes that while the pandemic has made the systemic inequities in our health-care system more visible, it could also act as “a catalyst” to prompt action on some of the issues highlighted in her report. This, she said, could include rapid housing and other measures to address homelessness.

She also spoke about the impact on long-term housing during the second wave, saying that while there have been a number of reports of outbreaks in these facilities, she is encouraged that they have been “smaller outbreaks.”

Tam said the next step is to take a target approach to helping facilities that have had now had multiple outbreaks..
