Coronavirus: Canada announces air travellers will require negative COVID-19 test upon arrival

Intergovernmental Affairs Minister Dominic LeBlanc announced on Wednesday that Canada would require all air travel passengers arriving in the country to show they had received a negative COVID-19 test result within three days before arrival. He said the measures will come into effect in the next few days.

Public Safety Minister Bill Blair advised that airlines are responsible to ensure the passenger has a negative COVID-19 test and is exhibiting no symptoms. He said in addition, on arrival they must quarantine for 14 days and that a negative test is not to be used in place of quarantine. Blair added that if you violate quarantine, people can face up to six months in jail or a $750,000 fine.

The minister also said there were discussions taking place looking into a testing pilot program at Toronto-Pearson International Airport, examining how a testing and monitoring program could provide additional defences to the spread of COVID-19.
