Alberta’s chief medical officer of health Dr. Deena Hinshaw spent part of her COVID-19 update on Wednesday discussing the continued strain on the health-care system, despite decreasing hospitalizations from COVID-19.

“While hospitalizations are declining, the health-care system is still feeling this strain today, which impacts anyone who needs care regardless of whether it is because of COVID or any other reason.” Hinshaw said.

Hinshaw also stressed it was important that Albertans do not ignore symptoms of serious conditions and that care is available, saying “to keep it that way, it is essential that we keep the restrictions in place for a little while longer.”

The province reported 604 patients were in hospital due to COVID-19 and 110 of those cases in intensive care.

Meanwhile, Alberta is still aiming to provide second doses of the COVID-19 vaccine within a 42-day window. Hinshaw said the province does have its allocation for next week, but not for after that.

“We don’t, unfortunately, know yet how much vaccine we’ll be getting in two weeks’ time,” she said.

“Our current intention is to have the interval between the first and second dose only go a maximum of 42 days.”
