New research is adding to the evidence systemic racism is rampant in the Alberta health-care system.

A study published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal shows evidence of widespread discrimination against Indigenous patients in Alberta hospital emergency departments. Data collected from 11 million emergency room visits between 2012 and 2017 found that emergency room staff consistently rated First Nations people as less urgent than non-Indigenous patients.

Heather Yourex-West explains the findings while looking at how Indigenous patients are also discriminated against in other provinces, and the hopes workers will address their biases.
