Conservative MP Kerry-Lynne Findlay questioned Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Thursday after Gen. Jonathan Vance, the country's former chief of the defence staff, pleaded guilty Wednesday to one count of obstruction of justice.
The charge came after military police launched a formal investigation following allegations of inappropriate behaviour first published by Global News last year. Findlay said it was not just Vance's conduct in the "sad, sick story," saying others knew about the situation. Global News first reported that the allegation of sexual misconduct was reported to then-military ombudsman Gary Walbourne in 2018. At the time, the prime minister's office, the defence minister's office, Trudeau's chief of staff Katie Telford, and then defence minister Harjit Sajjan were all made aware of the claim. But Walbourne says he brought evidence of the allegation directly to Sajjan's office -- where the minister refused to see it.
The Liberals were also urged by NDP MP Lindsay Mathyssen to take action now for women in the military.
Vance entered the plea following a year that has seen the Canadian Forces embroiled in what experts have called an existential crisis over multiple allegations of sexual misconduct against senior leaders.
