Canada's former chief of the defence staff Gen. Jonathan Vance pleaded guilty to one count of obstruction in an Ottawa court on Wednesday. The charge was laid against him following an investigation into allegations of inappropriate behaviour first published by Global News last year.

The former top general appeared in the virtual courtroom and admitted to having pressured Major Kelly Brennan to lie to police about their past affair and relationship.

The judge sentenced Vance to one year of probation and 80 hours of community service that he will have to complete.

Mercedes Stephenson has the details.
