Chauvin’s guilty verdict seen as small step toward racial justice in America

After less than 10 hours of deliberating, a jury has convicted former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin of murder and manslaughter in the death of George Floyd.

Floyd, a 46-year-old Black man died after Chauvin knelt on his neck for more than nine minutes during an arrest on May 25, 2020.

With the guilty verdict, Black Americans from Missouri to Florida to Minnesota cheered, marched, hugged, waved signs and sang jubilantly in the streets. But they also tempered those celebrations with the heavy knowledge that Chauvin’s conviction was just a first, tiny step on the long road to address centuries of racist policing in a nation founded on slavery.
